SWR Mysuru Division holds essay contest to mark World Heritage Day

Mysore/Mysuru: Marking the World Heritage Day, South Western Railway (SWR), Mysuru Division, had organised an essay competition on the theme ‘Heritage Changes and Roadmap of the Railways to contribute in cutting down carbon emissions’ at the Rail Museum premises in city yesterday.

The event aimed in increasing awareness about the value of cultural assets, the vulnerability of sites and monuments and the measures necessary to protect and conserve them through affirmative and time bound programmes. Indian Railways is having an ambitious plan to become carbon neutral by 2030 by eliminating fossil fuel and significantly cut down use of petroleum based resources.

Shilpi Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), South Western Railway, Mysuru Division, inaugurated the essay competition. Over 30 students from different schools participated in the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Shilpi Agarwal highlighted culture’s significance and the need to honour and appreciate the diverse cultural expressions around us. “Railways have taken great strides in recent times for optimising renewable sources of energy which could significantly contribute towards promoting the preservation of fragile ecosystem,” she said and appreciated the keen interest shown by young children in understanding what is the greatest threat to mankind due to the climate change caused by human actions.

Vinayak R. Nayak and E. Vijaya, Additional DRMs and other senior branch officers of Mysuru Division were present.
