Symposium spreads awareness on bone grafts and ‘tooth bank’

Mysuru: The Department of Periodontology, JSS Dental College and Hospital, Mysuru, had organised a symposium on ‘Bone and bone grafts’ in city recently. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Siddaramiah, Professor and Head, Department of Polymer Science and Technology, JSS Science and Technology University.

The symposium was held to spread awareness about bone grafts and relatively newer concepts like having a  ‘tooth bank’ in which an extracted tooth can be preserved and used as a bone regenerating graft material in the same individual, rather than discarding them.

The JSS Department of Periodontology has also introduced an equipment named ‘Smart Dentin Grinder’. It is a chair side kit which helps to procure bone graft material from an extracted tooth easily and efficiently.

A live demonstration of the Smart Dentin Grinder was given by Dr. Minu and Dr. Mudit, who explained the procedure for using the new equipment.

A lecture on autogenous graft material was given by Dr. Sheela Kumar (Professor and Head of the Department). Lectures on other topics such as the basics of the alveolar bone, the history, current trends and future prospects of bone grafts were also delivered by Dr. Deepika, Dr. Pratibha, Dr. Avinash and Dr. Anitha respectively.

A total of 107 delegates from Mysuru and Bengaluru including staff, post graduate and under graduate students and clinicians attended the symposium.
