Mysuru, June 3 – The Mysuru District Road Safety Committee has identified 120 accident-prone Black Spots across the district and drawn up plans to improve safety and prevent road accidents.
Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy said that the development works would be taken up at these locations with the objective of reducing fatalities.
Chairing a meeting of the Road Safety Committee at the DC’s office yesterday, he directed officials to conduct field inspections of accident-prone stretches, identify the exact causes of accidents and initiate corrective measures.
Black Spots are road stretches that have gained notoriety for frequent accidents. In road safety management, a Black Spot refers to a location with a history of a high concentration of road traffic accidents.
Such accident-prone stretches may result from factors such as sharp curves, sudden drops, poor visibility at junctions, inadequate warning signage or other road engineering deficiencies. A 500-metre stretch is classified as a Black Spot if it records more than 10 fatal accidents over a period of three years.
Reviewing the progress made so far, the DC noted that most of the identified Black Spots fall under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department and National Highways Authority of India. He urged the Departments to seek Government grants and, wherever possible, execute the works under existing allocations.
Within Mysuru city limits, the DC instructed the Mysuru City Corporation and the Police Department to jointly survey Black Spots and undertake necessary improvement works.
Pointing out that even minor interventions such as installing signboards could help prevent accidents, he called for strict monitoring of the identified locations. He also directed officials to conduct mandatory spot inspections in all cases of fatal road accidents. Further, he ordered the closure of unauthorised openings along the Ring Road that facilitate unsafe vehicle movement.
SP Mallikarjun Baladandi, Assistant Commissioner of Police M. Shivashankar, PWD Executive Engineer Padmanabha, MCC Superintending Engineer C.S. Manju, NHAI Site Engineer B. Arun, Siddarthanagar Traffic Inspector Shivaprasad Rao and V.V. Puram Traffic Inspector V.D. Mamata were present.
