Tea vendor evicted from footpath creates ruckus

June 29, 2018

Mysuru: Even as former Minister and MLA S.A. Ramdas took out a Padayatra on June 27 in a few areas in K.R. Constituency and directed the MCC officials to clear the footpaths of vendors and not to allow sale of non-vegetarian food, the MCC officials cleared the footpaths this morning near RTO Office and Law Courts thus putting the livelihood of many of the vendors  in jeopardy.

A physically challenged vendor Manjunath, who runs a petty shop near the RTO Office on Vani Vilas Road selling tea and biscuits, was in for a shock when he came yesterday morning only to find that he has been evicted from the premises and created a ruckus.

Manjunath, a medallist in the physically challenged competitions, unable to come to terms with this sudden turn of events, chose the only way to draw the attention of his plight by lying on the road and rolling over again and again.

He told SOM that he was given permission to set up a roadside shop in Vontikoppal by the Corporator. However, he had to vacate the place and after that he had come here and was making his livelihood since the last one year selling tea and biscuits.

Even the vendors opposite the Law Courts selling fruits have been vacated.

The Police reached the spot and made enquiries.

However, the Street Vendors Act 2014 was enacted to regulate street vendors in public places and protect their rights.
