Things that took away the ‘Cleanest City’ tag

This refers to the news item “Swachh Survekshan -2023: MCC Seeks Citizen Feedback” in SOM dated Aug. 4 to ensure that Mysuru gets a higher ranking in the eighth edition of Swachh Survekshan under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0.

The piling up of garbage at various locations alongside roads has become an eyesore and a significant source of foul smell.

Additionally, these garbage heaps have turned into breeding grounds for various insects and pests that can spread diseases. Regrettably, these garbage corners throughout our city have tarnished its reputation as a clean and well-maintained city.

While the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has invested a considerable amount of money in acquiring machinery and vehicles for waste management, the garbage pickup and disposal system still seems to be ineffective. It is crucial for the MCC to address these issues promptly and efficiently to win the ‘Cleanest City’ tag.

However, the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness should not solely fall on the MCC authorities. As residents, we should also play an active role in keeping not only our surroundings clean but the public places too. By collectively taking responsibility for our environment, we can work towards restoring the Cleanest City tag.
