Mangaluru: Heavy rainfall in two coastal districts of Karnataka – Dakshina Kannada and Udupi — on Tuesday has claimed three lives be sides bringing normal life to a standstill.
The Government has deployed NDRF teams to help the local administration in rescuing people. The Met department has predicted more rain in the coastal towns today and put the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams on a standby for bigger relief operations. The Home Ministry said that it is closely monitoring the situation and if required, more NDRF personnel will be pressed into service.
Several areas in Mangaluru were inundated following downpour on Tuesday for the third consecutive day. Movement of vehicles were badly hit. Water also entered several factories in Baikampady industrial area, throwing the situation out of control. Several market areas were flooded after heavy downpour. Children of a Mangaluru school were rescued by fire officials and taken away in inflatable boats.
Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy reviewed the situation and has assured all necessary steps to rescue people and prevent loss of lives.
