Mysuru: The three-week training programme in Introduction to Translation began at the National Translation Mission (NTM), Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, on Jan. 12.
Prof. D. G. Rao, Director, CIIL, inaugurated the Translation Training Programme while Prof. Alain Desoulieres, Institut National des Langueset Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), France, gave the inaugural lecture. Dr. Tariq Khan, Officer-in-charge, NTM, welcomed and briefed about the objectives of translation training programme.
Prof. Alain Desoulieres appreciated this initiative of the NTM and likened the objectives of the Mission to that of the European Union. He emphasised that most developed countries of world have benefitted from translation.
Prof. S. K. Mishra, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, who is an expert in the field and Dr. C. V. Shivaramakrishna, Head, Centre for Translation Studies, CIIL, were also present during the inauguration.
About seventy trainees representing sixteen States, twelve languages and eleven Universities/institutions are undergoing training from the experts in the field. During the 21-day stay at CIIL, the trainees will also translate some Knowledge Texts in the languages they know.
NTM is an apex body for translation, and it organises such trainings for skill development of translators and promotion of translation as an industry in India. So far NTM has organised 26 such trainings and trained nearly one thousand translators.
