Tibetans Uprising Day observed in city

March 13, 2021

Mysore/Mysuru: Tibetans staged a dharna in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday last as part of 61st Tibetan Uprising Day.

It was on this day, in 1959, Tibetans raised their voice against the presence of the People’s Republic of China in Tibet. The failure of the armed rebellion ultimately resulted in a violent crackdown on Tibetan independence movements, and forced Dalai Lama to take shelter in India. Tibetan Uprising Day is observed primarily by organisations and individuals such as Tibetan Youth Congress and Regional Tibetan Women Organisations urging the United Nations to intervene and free Tibet from the Chinese occupation. They also demanded the release of political prisoners and restoration of Tibetan culture.

Hundreds of Tibetans from Bylakuppe, Kollegal, Hunsur and other places participated in the protest.
