Citizens question why Traffic Police are not seizing unattended vehicles

Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner M.K. Savitha has clarified that abandoned vehicles parked along city roads will be removed after the Dasara festivities.

“Several vehicles without legal heirs have been left along roadsides in different parts of Mysuru. Notices had already been pasted on these vehicles, giving a deadline for their removal. However, as Police personnel were engaged in security duties during Gowri-Ganesha festival, clearance drive could not be taken up,” she said.

With Dasara preparations now in full swing, MCC staff are busy with festival-related works. Based on the advice of the Police Department, the clearance of abandoned vehicles will be taken up only after Dasara, she added.

“The Corporation has to complete all preparatory works by Sept. 30. Daily inspections are being conducted at 6 am to review the progress and identify pending works. Meetings with officials are held immediately afterwards and instructions are issued to prioritise and complete the works within the stipulated time,” MCC Commissioner Savitha said.

Police questioned

Citizens, however, have questioned why the City Traffic Police are unable to seize the abandoned vehicles, particularly those obstructing traffic and remaining on roadsides for months or even years. They have urged the Traffic Police to conduct special drives to remove such vehicles and auction those that remain unclaimed. Such action, they said, would also deter vehicle owners from leaving their vehicles unattended for long periods.

Citizens have also raised concerns over the lack of coordination between the MCC and the Police Department, which they say has allowed the problem to worsen.
