‘Total rights over forest should belong to tribals’

November 16, 2025

Mysore/Mysuru: Prof. Vishwanatha, Vice-chancellor of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics University, has advocated that, the total rights over forest should belong to the tribals.

Speaking after inaugurating the two-day national conference on ‘Traditional Practices of Karnataka Tribal Communities’ at Karnataka State Tribal Research Institute (KSTRI), Bogadi in the city recently, Prof. Vishwanatha opined that, the heritage practices of tribal communities form the identity of the particular community and it is essential to conserve them. What makes it significant, is its unique civilisation, with nomadic being the core of all civilisation.

Now, there is an apprehension over the plot to discourage tribal culture, as the religious practices differ among various sects within the tribals. What is lacking is authentic documentation of the tribal practices that define religious culture across the country, rued Prof. Vishwanatha.

KSTRI Director T. Yogesh, who addressed the gathering through video conference, said 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, is being celebrated on Nov. 15. It is a big challenge for tribals to protect their indigenous quality and culture along with achieving progress. Such conferences should deliberate and discuss on respecting tribal culture and hereditary knowledge, that would be helpful in framing the policies.

KSRTI Deputy Director H.S. Girijamba and others were present.
