It is common knowledge that one of the major problems confronting Mysuru city is the rampant violation of traffic rules. As an ordinary citizen, I feel deeply embarrassed by the magnitude of these violations.

I am certain that the top brass of the Police Department would share the same embarrassment if they truly observed the scale of these infractions.

By my own rough estimate, there are at least 10,000 violations of the ‘one-way’ rule alone every single day. Having Traffic Constables posted at key junctions has not made much of a difference, as these violations occur right under their nose.

More often than not, Constables are seen speaking on their mobile phones or scrolling through them instead of                         monitoring traffic.

A simple and effective way to curb these violations would be to install CCTV cameras on all designated ‘one-way’ roads.

At times, I am astonished by the sheer audacity and dare-devilry displayed by these violators — a misplaced courage that could well rival the valour of our soldiers defending the nation’s borders!

If all the violations occurring on the main roads, lanes and by-lanes of Mysuru round-the-clock were to be captured, the daily collection of traffic fines could easily run into crores.

One can only imagine the enormous potential this holds for revenue generation. If implemented across the State, this could even become one of the major sources of income for the Government — perhaps enabling it to announce a few more guarantees.
