Train guard who risked his life to reset alarm chain felicitated

January 1, 2019

Mysuru:  N. Vishnumoorthy, a passenger guard on the Tirupati Express, who risked his life to reset an alarm chain pulled by a passenger was given a cash award and felicitated yesterday. Ajay Kumar Singh, General Manager, South Western Railway, presented certificates and cash award to Vishnumoorthy, Senior Passenger Guard of Bengaluru Division for his commendable work. Pulling the alarm chain brings the train to a halt but the chain has to be reset manually to restore air pressure without which the train cannot move.

Vishnumoorthy was working on Train No.16219 Chamarajanagar-Tirupati Express on Dec. 26 and the train was stopped at Srirangapatna girder bridge due to Inter chain communication (ICC) known as alarm chain pulling.

The coach on which the emergency chain was pulled came to a halt on the bridge across River Cauvery. Vishnumoorthy walked the rake and on identifying the coach found it to be unapproachable as it was in the middle of the bridge.

By risking his life he walked on the bridge without any walkway and restored the chain that was stuck to the last vehicle board. Vishnumoorthy could complete this difficult job in 10 minutes and moreover, he also caught the offender who pulled alarm chain without any valid reason and handed him over to Railway Protection Force.

In recognition of his work, Ajay Kumar Singh, General Manager, South Western Railway, presented a cash award of Rs. 5,000 to Vishnumoorthy, according to a press release from the Railways.
