Mysuru: A turtle that suffered severe injuries during canal excavation work near Mallupur village in Nanjangud Taluk was successfully treated and released into the Kapila River after a week-long rescue and rehabilitation effort. The turtle was seriously injured when an excavator bucket struck it during canal works, shattering its upper shell. According to those involved in the rescue, some residents attempted to take away the injured reptile, reportedly for consumption.
Yuva Brigade member Ravi Shastri intervened and rescued the turtle. He then contacted his friend Chandrashekar, sharing photographs of the injured animal and seeking assistance.
Veterinarians initially expressed doubts about the turtle’s chances of survival as its shell had split into two. However, Chandrashekar undertook efforts to save it. Using a small drilling machine, he made holes along the broken edges of the shell and secured them with rust-resistant wire. The damaged shell fragments were then reinforced with a wire mesh and covered with a sealant to create a protective outer layer. The turtle was kept under observation in a water tank for five days. Initially unable to move properly, it gradually recovered, began swimming and resumed feeding. The artificial shell support remained intact throughout the rehabilitation period. After signs of complete recovery, the turtle was released into the Kapila River. On being released, it swam away, much to the delight of those who had gathered to witness the moment
