Tuskers destroy huts at Hunsur tribal hamlet

Hunsur: Two tuskers, which appeared all of a sudden at Chikkahejjur Tribal Hamlet in Veeranahosahalli Forest Range, have destroyed huts, cowshed and toilets at about 6 am today.

Kusaiah, a tribal, was tying his cattle at about 6 am today, when two tuskers appeared all of a sudden near the hamlet. He soon informed his children who were nearby who managed to escape. The cattle, which saw the tuskers, managed to free themselves and flee from the spot.

The two tuskers then entered the hamlet and destroyed the huts, cowshed and toilets belonging to Kusaiah before returning to the forest.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said that one of the tusker managed to jump the 3ft. high railway barricade put up by the Forest Department and entered the forest, while the other tusker managed to enter the forest after passing the check-post. Luckily, no injuries or loss of life was reported.

Concerned over their safety, the residents of Chikkahejjur Tribal Hamlet have urged the Forest Department authorities to increase the height of the railway barricades put up to prevent elephants from entering the hamlets and to take other precautionary measures for their safety.
