Kushalnagar: Functionaries of the Thanjavur South District Unit of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) offered special puja, homa and a yajna at Talacauvery, the birthplace of the River Cauvery in Kodagu district, on Thursday, praying for abundant rainfall and improved inflows into the river.
The TVK, led by actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay, organised the rituals by engaging local priests and sought divine blessings for widespread rainfall across the Cauvery basin during the southwest monsoon.
Talacauvery, nestled in the Brahmagiri Hills, is a revered pilgrimage centre where the Cauvery originates. Devotees traditionally take a holy dip at the sacred site, while farmers and devotees from Kodagu, Mysuru and Mandya districts offer prayers to Goddess Cauvery before the commencement of the agricultural season. According to Madhan, District Secretary of the TVK’s Thanjavur South Unit, the devotees regarded it as an auspicious sign when rain began just as the rituals concluded.

“As our prayers came to an end, the skies opened up at Talacauvery. It brought immense joy to all of us,” he told the media in Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, a team from the Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited (Harangi Dam) also performed special puja at Talacauvery on Thursday, seeking bountiful rainfall. The team first offered prayers at the Sri Bhagandeshwaraswamy Temple in Bhagamandala, before proceeding to Talacauvery, where special rituals were held at the Holy Kundike.
The team comprised Superintending Engineer (SE) Satish, Assistant Executive Engineers (AEEs) Puttaswamy & Gokul, Assistant Engineer (AE) Kiran and Technical Assistant Kaviprasad.
The prayers assume significance as the Cauvery catchment areas in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have received significantly below-normal rainfall during the ongoing southwest monsoon.
