Mysuru: In celebration of World Environment Day, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Mysuru Regional Office, launched a major cleanliness and plastic waste eradication drive at Bommanahalli village in Mysuru taluk.

The initiative was held in collaboration with the District Administration, Madilu Educational and Rural Development Society, Nagawala Gram Panchayat, and several other organisations.

The highlight of the initiative was the revival of a lake and two kalyanis (stepwells) that had long been on the verge of extinction. Overgrown with trees, weeds, and shrubs for years, the water bodies were painstakingly restored to a usable state. As part of the clean-up, 150 kg of plastic waste was removed from the lake’s periphery.

The drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from 200 students representing Maharaja Institute of Technology Tandavapura (MITT), Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE), and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), along with 100 factory workers.

The event also featured an awareness campaign on the importance of maintaining cleanliness and tackling plastic pollution.

The campaign was led by Senior Environmental Officer S. Rajashekar, Environmental Officers V. Sunil and V.S. Kumar, Madilu Executive Director K. Srinivas, SJCE’s B.M. Sadashivamurthy, KSPCB DEO Hariprasad and environmental workers Nubia, Netravathi, Jayalakshmi and the PDO Factory staff.

The drive served as both a symbolic and practical reminder of community involvement in environmental conservation and waste management.
