Mysore/Mysuru: Online fraudsters have siphoned off a total of Rs. 6.67 lakh from the Bank accounts of two senior citizens in the guise of asking the elder citizens to pay their pending power bills by installing a Quick Support mobile phone app.
In the first case, K.B. Ramaprakash, a resident of an apartment in V.V. Mohalla, received a message on his mobile phone which asked him to pay the pending power bill failing which power connection to his flat would be disconnected.
Later Ramprakash received a call on his phone and the caller asked him to install the Quick Support App to pay the bill. Ramprakash, to avoid power connection being disconnected installed the App and followed the instructions during the installation. Soon, the fraudsters siphoned off Rs. 4.40 lakh from his bank account.
In the second case, 80-year-old Vatsalchari, a resident of Yadavagiri, received a message on his mobile phone which asked him to update his power bill failing which power would be disconnected to his house. Later, a website link was sent to his WhatsApp number for the payment and when Vatsalchari clicked on the website link, Rs. 2,74,920 was deducted from his Bank account.
Doctor cheated
In yet another case, fraudsters have cheated a doctor to the tune of Rs. 98,000 after blackmailing him. Dr. G. Rajkumar, a resident of Bannur Road in city is the one who has been cheated.
Dr. Rajkumar received a call on his WhatsApp where the caller began to harass him to pay the loan instalment for the loan he had taken. Later, the doctor’s Facebook and WhatsApp accounts were hacked and the miscreants also downloaded many photos, edited the photos and sent the same to all the contact numbers in the doctor’s contact list to blackmail him. Miscreants then cheated the doctor of Rs. 98,000. City’s Cyber, Economic and Narcotics (CEN) Crime Police, who have registered cases, are investigating.
