Two-wheelers ride on rails

Mysore/Mysuru: Giving further push to automobile transportation, South Western Railway (SWR), Mysuru Division, loads TVS two-wheelers in New Modified Goods (NMG) rake from Kadakola to Changsari near Guwahati, Assam, covering a distance of nearly 3,000 kms.

This traffic has come to Railways due to sustained efforts of Business Development Unit set up on the Division.

NMG rakes are modified coaches to facilitate the easy movement of automobiles. One full NMG rake has 25 coaches. On an average, one coach can carry 40 two-wheelers, thus carrying around 1,000 vehicles in one move. This traffic was hitherto moved by road. Marketing efforts of the Business Development Unit of the Division is yielding promising returns. Mysuru Division has recently captured new agricultural commodities such as Areca nut, ginger, spices, coconut etc., from various corners of the State. Iron Ore traffic is also diversified with longer lead to Goa and Maharashtra.
