Underground Drainage Assistants to stage protest on Mar. 28

Mysore/Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Underground Drainage (UGD) Assistants and Pourakarmikas’ Association Working President Kumaraswamy has informed that a protest will be staged at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on Mar. 28 to demand the confirmation of services of 544 UGD Assistants who are working in 10 City Corporations of the State. He also said that they will suspend their work indefinitely till the Government fulfil their demands.

Addressing a press meet at Patrakarthara Bhavan here on Tuesday, Kumaraswamy said “Many UGD Assistants have died while cleaning manholes across the State. It is very difficult to clean the manholes daily as it affects the health of many workers. Many workers have been infected with skin diseases and about 5-6 workers have lost their lives in the 10 City Corporations of the State during the last one year. But since the Govt. has considered UGD Assistants as UGD Helpers, we are deprived of many benefits that are given to permanent and contract civic workers,” he said and urged the State Govt. to abolish contract system and confirm the services of UGD Assistants working across the 10 City Corporations across the State.

Association office-bearers Muruga, Hanumesh, Rajagopal and others were present at the press meet.
