Ustad Faiyaz Khan to present Hindustani Vocal Concert on Jan.4

To release audio CD of Vidushi Shrimathi Devi

Gayana Sabha, Mysuru, has organised a Hindustani Music Concert by Ustad Faiyaz Khan and release of Audio CD of Vidushi Shrimathi Devi at Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha on JLB Road  in city on Jan. 4 at 5.30 pm.

The programme will start with a short Hindustani music recital by Vidushi Shrimathi Devi, release of the audio CD and finally Hindustai music concert by Ustad Faiyaz Khan. The accompanying artistes are Pt. Bhimashankar Bidanur on tabla and Pt. Veerabhadrayya Hiremath on harmonium.

Ustad Faiyaz Khan was born in Dharwad into a family of musicians from the Kirana Gharana. His father Ustad Abdul Quadar Khan was a staff artiste in AIR (Dharwad) and his grand-father Ustad Sheikh Abdulla Khan was a court musician at the Mysore Palace and the Palace of the Nawabs of Hyderabad.

Faiyaz Khan started his training under the guidance of his father in both Sarangi and Vocal at the age of 6. At the same time he learnt tabla under  the guidance of noted Tabla Maestro and Guru Pt. Basavaraj Bendigeri and Ustad Mammulal Sangaunkar. From an early age he has accompanied accomplished Musicians throughout India and abroad. After his father’s demise he moved to Mumbai to continue his training under Padma Vibhushan Pt. Ramnarayan. Ustad Faiyaz Khan  has accompanied on sarangi with Dr. Gangu Bai Hangal, Pt. m.r. Gautham, Dr. Prabha Athre, Pt. Ajay Pohankar, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee, Pt. Suresh Talvalkar, Pt. Yogesh Samsi, Pt. Shubhankar Banerjee, Pt. Vijay Ghate, Pt. Swapan Chaudhri to name a few.

When he moved to Bengaluru in 1995, apart from his Indian Classical Concerts he also established himself as an accomplished contributor in the South Indian Film Industry. He has worked with famous Music Directors like A.R. Rahman, Rajan Nagendra, Vijay Bhaskar, Hamsalekha, M.M. Keervani, Raman Goukula to name a few.

He is actively involved with Institutions like the Bharteeya Sangeeth Vidyalaya (Kochi) that are seriously working on promoting pure classical music. He also runs his own Music Academy, Parveen Begum Smruti Music & Edu Trust in Bengaluru where students are trained in Hindustani Classical Music in the traditional Gurukul system. Now Ustad Faiyaz Khan is Serving as President of Sangeetha Nrithya  Academy (Karnataka).

Shrimathi Devi learnt under the tutelage of late Pandit Chandrashekhar Puranikmath, the famous vocalist of Gwalior Gharana in  Dharwad. She got advanced training under Vidushi Padma Talwalkar, Pune, and also from Sri Vysamurthy Katti of Bengaluru.

Vidushi Shrimathi Devi has been awarded 2nd prize in All India AIR Music competitions in Hindustani vocal (2010); Has B-high Grade of AIR in both Classical Vocal and  Light Music genres; Recipient of ‘Scholarship for Young Artistes’ given by the Ministry of Culture (2010-12); Received the ‘Tamankar Award’ from the Academy of Performing Arts, Hubli, under the patronage of Dr. Gangubai Hangal; Vamanadaji Shastriya Sangeeth Puraskar, Kanakavalli, Maharashtra; Has received first rank in Sangeetha Alankara exam conducted by Akhila Bharatha Gandharva Mahamandala, Miraj, first time ever in Karnataka.

She has performed in DD Chandana and completed MA with first class in English Literature with 3rd rank.
