Veerashaiva Mahasabha demands reservation for community in MCC polls

Mysuru: Claiming that there were about three lakh Veerashaiva-Lingayat Community members living in the city, constituting more than 25 percent of the city’s population, the Mysuru city unit of Akhila Bharath Veerashaiva Mahasabha has demanded reservation for the community in the forthcoming MCC polls.

In a press release, Mahasabha President T. Lingaraju said that areas such as J.P. Nagar, Agrahara, Gowrishankar Nagar, Kuvempunagar, Shaktinagar, JSS Layout, Vidyashankar Layout, Raghavendranagar and Siddarthanagar have a large population of community members. But the recent reservation announced by the State Government for the MCC polls scheduled to take place in September, defies logic, as the authorities have ignored the communities which are dominant in the respective areas, he added.

Maintaining that the Government has thrown to the winds the normal practice of announcing reservation based on a particular community’s strength, he said that the reservation announced recently is illogical and ill conceived.

As such, the Government should declare eight MCC Wards — Ward Nos. 9, 35, 37, 51, 52, 53, 62, and 63 — for Backward Class-B category or General category to which Veerashaiva-Lingayat Community members belong to or else the Mahasabha will be left with no option but to wage a legal battle seeking justice for the community, the release said.
