Virajpet: The road that connects Virajpet to Kerala via the Perumbadi Check-Post has been cut off, thanks to incessant rains and it will take two months to restore the road.Till then, vehicles moving towards Kerala will have to take the road via Gonikoppal, Ponnampet, Kutta to reach Manandavadi in Kerala.
The road caved-in on June 20 as water from a nearby lake at Perumbadi overflowed and entered a small culvert below the road. Due to the force of the water, the road collapsed bringing the traffic movement to a grinding halt.
Visiting the caved-in road yesterday, MLC Veena Achaiah said that temporary arrangements will be made to facilitate the movement of small vehicles and people living in border areas. As a permanent solution, the collapsed portion has to be completely excavated and should be connected with a bridge or a concrete structure.
She said that the road collapse issue had already been brought to the notice of Kodagu District In-charge Minister M.R. Seetharam and soon, CM Siddharamaiah would be told about this. “We will try and get grants from the Public Works Department so that the works can begin immediately,” she said.
Kodagu District Congress President Shivu Madappa, Block Congress President R.K. Abdul Salam, D.C. Dhruvakumar of Congress Legal Cell, Town President G.G. Mohan and others were present.
