Mysuru: Sri Thyagaraja Sangeetha Sabha Charitable Trust, Mysuru, has organised a Karnatak vocal concert by the Padma Shri awardee Rudrapatnam Brothers — Vidwans R.N. Thyagarajan and Dr. R.N. Tharanathan — tomorrow (July 31) at 6 pm at Sangeetha Kalanidhi Mysore Vasudevacharya Bhavana, Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha, JLB Road, Mysuru, in memory of Y.N. Ananth.
They will be accompanied by Vid. Mysore V. Srikanth on violin, Vid. Sanjay Tharanathan on mridanga and Vid. Sharath Koushik on ghata.
The Rudrapatnam Brothers are one of the acclaimed Karnatak vocal duo, consisting of R.N. Thyagarajan and Dr. R.N. Tharanathan, hailing from an illustrious musical family from Rudrapatna. They are grandsons of R.K. Krishna Sastry, a musician, Harikatha exponent and a Sanskrit and Kannada scholar.
Their father, R.K. Narayana Swamy, was a disciple of revered musician, Musiri Subramania Iyer belonging to the Thyagaraja lineage. Their uncles are eminent musicians, R.K. Venkatarama Sastry, R.K. Ramanathan and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Padma Bhushan Dr. R.K. Srikantan.
Starting their careers in academics, Thyagarajan later joined AIR and retired as Deputy Director, Doordarshan, Bengaluru, while Tharanathan moved on to CFTRI, Mysuru and retired as Addl. Director. He was recipient of Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship.
Their musical journey spans more than sixty years with thousands of concerts. They have been bestowed with prestigious awards such as ‘Sangeetha Kala Acharya’ from Madras Music Academy, ‘Sangeetha Kalarathna’ from Gayana Samaja, Bengaluru, ‘Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award,’ ‘Karnataka Kalashree’ and the coveted ‘Padma Shri’ title.
