Bengaluru: Amid the surge in COVID-19 crisis, the Government has postponed the elections to Karnataka Vokkaligara Sangha, which was scheduled to take place on May 16.
The Karnataka High Court (HC), which heard a petition filed by Film Producer Krishnegowda seeking conduct of elections for the State Vokkaligara Sangha, had directed the Government on Mar. 5, 2021 to hold the elections in three months.
Following the HC’s directions, the Government appointed an Electoral Officer for the Sangha and ordered for the conduct of elections on May 16.
With the surge in the second wave of the deadly COVID-19 virus, the Electoral Officer had recently written to the Government that it was appropriate to postpone the elections.
Subsequent to the Electoral Officer’s letter, the Government filed an interim application to the High Court seeking relaxation in the three-month period deadline. The Court, which agreed to the Government’s appeal, permitted for postponement of the election.
Following the Court’s ruling, the Government issued an order on Friday postponing the Vokkaligara Sangha elections until further notice.
