Every day, the blazing heat of summer sun pierces through the already-thin ozone layer sending people scurrying for a spot under the shade of a tree even if it is for a few seconds of respite while waiting for the traffic light to change to green.
It is an irony, however, that hardly anyone cares to think about how the tree cover itself is under threat by the very set of people seeking its canopy. Is it surprising then that we have least concern for another resource (water) that has no substitute? It is then but natural that man is ‘drowning’ in water woes!
Gallons of precious water is wasted in Mysuru every day at a time when there is a desperate need to save each drop. Sadly, the educated and well-to-do professionals waste water the most while their rural and rustic counterparts plant trees and conserve water.
The reason why I am writing this letter is to request people to use water more judiciously since the levels at KRS is depleting at an alarming rate. Water, despite all scientific advancements, cannot be manufactured in a laboratory. There are umpteen videos that educate us about how much water is required to produce what man consumes, right from food, clothing, shelter and his other needs and requirements. It’s time to pay heed to that.
Please don’t wash vehicles and courtyards and bathe pets. The only way out is for us to initiate systems to drastically reduce usage and learn to reuse waste water. Water is irreplaceable and has no substitutes. By practicing simple steps we can conserve water and ensure its availability.
