What can we do?

May 22, 2019

Sir,

This has reference to the “Editor’s Bottom Line” in Star of Mysore dated Apr.25, 2019. A genuine question has been asked, how we can make the earth habitable again. The problems faced by us have been briefly mentioned in the statements.

Mahatma Gandhi’s statement that we need to be the change to do anything practicable to face the problems created by human beings on earth is significant.

We have done sufficient damage in the name of modern living showing our pomp and glory without any meaning. They are meant to dominate over groups that are living in pitiable conditions.

The amount of waste created on earth and in space by the so-called developed, civilised and developing countries is intense. Entire world is suffering due to the luxury of a few. Each country generates global warming waste in the name of industrialisation and development.

What does a human being need? The luxury in which one longs to live without bothering the wants of his or her brothers and sisters around is highly uncivilised. God made man to love one another and keep each other to develop. Alms giving should be curbed.

So it is the man who has to change and live in a normal way keeping the wants under check. Selfishness is needed to live a life, but selfishness should not lead to greediness disturbing the natural way of life. Science and technology in the hands of uncivilised, selfish and greedy people have become a curse rather than a grace bestowed upon human beings by Nature.

What is said here is very simple, but has profound significance. Between great things we yearn to do and little things we spurn to do, we should not be doing nothing. Forgetting this we may continue to damage the environment. Man has to change.
