Why do senior Police Officers often delegate responsibility to juniors?

September 14, 2024

Mysuru: Despite the persistent efforts of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), senior officers in the Police Department often do not make time to engage with the public, said MGP Founding President Dr. Bhamy V. Shenoy.

Speaking to Star of Mysore, he said that in earlier years, committed Officers like the much-admired H.R. Kasturirangan (who served as City Police Commissioner from Dec. 28, 1992 to May 6, 1995) would regularly attend MGP meetings.

Today, however, when MGP invites senior officials, they frequently delegate the responsibility to junior officers, who can only promise to pass on concerns to their superiors. But do they?

If high-ranking officials like the Police Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) attended these meetings, they could take decisive and provide action-oriented responses.

Senior officers have the authority to implement changes, whereas junior officers often lack the power and are not encouraged to critique the system or offer solutions, he opined.

However, one promising development is that DCP (Crime and Traffic) S. Jahnavi has agreed to attend the next MGP meeting, he added.
