Nagarahole: A wild elephant, which crossed a barricade made of iron railings of railway line at Veeranahosalli in Nagarahole Reserve Forest last night, has this morning destroyed maize crop and banana plantation nearby besides chasing a farmer who was ploughing his field and damaging a bike of a tribal, which was parked in a tribal hamlet.
The lone tusker, after destroying crops and banana plantation, tried to cross over the barricade to go into the forest this morning but in vain and had stayed put there.
Villagers of Kolavege, in their attempt to send the tusker back to the forest, chased it but the tusker entered the Chikkahejjur Tribal Hamlet forcing women and children to stay inside their houses. The tusker then damaged the Honda Unicorn bike (KA-45 Q-4262) of one Ramesh, which was parked outside the house.
The tusker then entered the field of one Kumar, who was ploughing the field and chased him. But Kumar managed to escape from the tusker.
Forest Department officials, who rushed to the spot, removed two railway railings of the barricade which is installed all along the forest border and chased the tusker back to the forest.
Luckily, no one was injured in the incident and the tusker too had stayed calm despite villagers venturing close to it to take pictures on their mobile phones..
