Mysore: In a shocking incident, a woman was allegedly gang-raped last night by three men in a drunken stupor on the city outskirts. The Jayapura Police have registered a case and taking the incident seriously, the Police have formed three teams to hunt for the perpetrators.
Mysuru Superintendent of Police Amit Singh told Star of Mysore this afternoon that the woman was gang-raped by three men and a case has been registered at Jayapura Police Station. Efforts are on to nab the accused, he added. “Preliminary investigation point out that the victim has been raped and we have acted accordingly and procedures are being followed,” he said.
Before committing the crime, the gang brutally assaulted the woman’s friend and broke one of his legs. They assaulted him with lethal weapons and the victim is battling for life at K.R. Hospital.
Jayapura Police said that the incident occurred at around 9.45 pm yesterday and they were informed about the crime by some local residents. Police said that Shivasiddappa (34), a native of Hand Post in H.D. Kote Taluk and a resident of K.G. Koppal was with his woman friend, who works at a showroom in city, at the time of the incident.
According to the Police, Shivasiddappa who works at a hotel in city and the woman became friends on a social networking site and they went on a bike to Lingambudhi Palya at Jayapura Hobli last night and were conversing with each other behind Malegara Maramma Temple.
Police said that a group of three men, who were consuming liquor inside a car nearby, spotted the duo and questioned their whereabouts. They got into an argument with Shivasiddappa and brutally assaulted him with lethal weapons. They allegedly broke one of Shivasiddappa’s legs and even attacked him with a machete.
The gang, according to the Police, then took turns to rape the woman. They later sped away in the car. Hearing the cries of the woman and her friend, some local passersby informed the Jayapura Police. Swinging into action, the Police team led by Jayapura Sub-Inspector Ashok brought Shivasiddappa to K.R. Hospital where he is battling for life. This noon, he was taken into the operation theatre, Police said.
Shivasiddappa’s family was informed by the Police this morning and his wife told cops that she was not aware of the incident and her husband had not returned home last night.
Meanwhile, the victim woman was taken to Cheluvamba Hospital where the Department of Women and Child Welfare has established a special cell “Gelathi” (friend) to deal with such cases. A mandatory medical check up was done on her and she was asked to come this morning for counselling.
The result of the medical check-up is not revealed as of now. However, the Police said that the woman did not turn up for counselling. Police are waiting to record the statement of Shivasiddappa on the incident for more details.
The SP and other Police officials visited the spot and three teams have been formed to nab the people involved in the crime. Sources said that the Police are examining the Call Details Records of the victims and are tracing phone numbers based on cell phone tower location.
