Woman strangles husband to death

She had projected it as heart attack but victim’s brother had suspected foul play

Mysuru: A woman, who had strangled her husband to death and cooked up a story by projecting it as a heart attack, has been arrested by Kuvempunagar Police following a complaint from the deceased man’s brother.

While the deceased is Nithyananda (50), a Manager at a vehicle showroom, the accused wife is 44-year-old Susheela, a teacher at a private school and residents of HUDCO Layout, Kuvempunagar in city.

Family feud

Nithyananda and Susheela were married for 20 years and were issueless. It is learnt that the couple used to quarrel over petty issues since a few years. Though the couple used to indulge in frequent quarrels, no big quarrels had taken place. But the reason for Susheela to murder her husband is not known, neighbours said.

Cooked up story

Nithyananda who came home drunk on Sunday night, had quarrelled with his wife Susheela. After sometime, the couple slept. But at midnight, Susheela allegedly strangled Nithyananda to death with a cloth. She then called her husband’s brother Prof. S.K. Naveen Kumar, Registrar (Administration) of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) and informed him about his brother’s death.

To cover up the crime, Susheela reportedly cooked up a story and told Prof. Naveen that Nithyananda had died of a heart attack at about 2 am. Susheela also called a few relatives and friends of her husband and informed them about her husband’s death. A few relatives arrived at the house of Nithyananda in the wee hours of yesterday and even the neighbours were grieving the death of Nithyananda, believing that he had died of a heart attack and even consoled Susheela.

Strangulation mark around neck

At about 8.30 am yesterday, Prof. Naveen and a few relatives arrived at Nithyananda’s house.

When Prof. Naveen and others were shifting Nithyananda’s body from the room to the hall of the house, they noticed a mark around his neck, scratch marks with dried blood on his cheek. Sensing something had taken place, they enquired Susheela, who told them that Nithyananda suffered a heart attack at about 2 am and she immediately rushed him to a nearby private hospital.

She further said that as Nithyananda had consumed liquor, the doctors refused to admit him but checked Nithyananda and told her that he was dead, following which she returned home with the body.

As Susheela’s statements gave rise to doubts, Nithyananda’s relatives informed Kuvempunagar Police.

Kuvempunagar Police, who reached the house, conducted mahazar, inspected the dead body and found the mark around his neck and suspected the death as murder.

The Cops immediately took Susheela into custody and interrogated her during which Susheela is said to have confessed of murdering her husband.

The Police, who collected information and evidences, shifted the body to MMC&RI mortuary where post-mortem was conducted last night and the body was handed over to the relatives of Nithyananda.

Relatives and friends of Nithyananda, who had arrived at the house with flowers to pay their last respects thinking that it was a natural death, saw the Police conducting mahazar and came to know the reason of the death. They then began to curse Susheela and hung the covers in which they had brought flowers to the iron grill of the house.

DCPs Dr. Harsha Priyamvada (Law and Order) and K.S. Sundar Raj (Crime and Traffic), ACP Prakash, Inspectors Rohit and Dhanaraj and other Police officers visited the spot.

DCP Dr. Harsha Priyamvada said, “Susheela has stated that frequent quarrels between the couple led to the murder. She (Susheela) also informed that she had used a bed sheet-like cloth to strangle. We are investigating in various angles including the possibility of others involved in the murder.”

A case has been registered at Kuvempunagar Police Station.
