Woman saved, search on for child

Mandya: A woman, in an attempt to commit suicide, jumped into the Cauvery River, along with her two-year-old daughter, from the bridge at Srirangapatna yesterday.

The woman was rescued, but her daughter was swept away by strong currents and was drowned.

While the woman has been identified as 24-year-old Apoorva of Lakshmisagar in Pandavapura taluk, her daughter who was drowned is Keethana.

The woman, along with her daughter, jumped near the north side of the bridge at Srirangapatna and the locals who saw the incident, rescued Apoorva near Karighatta Bridge at Ganjam about 2 km from the spot of the incident with the help of ropes. But her daughter Keerthana was swept away and drowned.

Srirangapatna Town Police, who rushed to the spot, have registered a case and have launched a search to trace the body of Keerthana. The search team is facing a herculean task in tracing the body as Cauvery River is in spate following release of a large quantity of water from KRS.
