Woman’s body retrieved from Thora landslide spot

NDRF personnel seen retrieving a body trapped under the debris caused by a landslide at Thora village yesterday.

Virajpet: The NDRF team which is carrying out rescue operations after a landslide at Thora village close to the Kerala border on Aug.9 in which 8 persons went missing, retrieved the body of a 45-year old woman from the spot on Monday.

Nine houses at Thora village had collapsed on Aug. 9 following huge landslide triggered by heavy rains.

While the NDRF succeeded in retrieving the bodies of a woman and her daughter the next day, Devaki, Anasuya, Amrutha, Aditya, Shankara, Appu, Leela and Veena were found missing. All those missing are suspected to be buried under the debris and mud. But on Monday, the NDRF team and the Police succeeded in retrieving the body of Anasuya (45), wife of Prabhu, a resident of the village, while the search operation is continuing to trace the bodies of others who have been trapped. Meanwhile, the body of 65-year-old painter was found in his marooned house at Kattemadu Perambu Paisari near Maragodu in Madikeri taluk on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Kunhanna (64), a painter by profession.

About 130 homes in the village were submerged by flood waters last week and it is suspected that Kunhanna may have died after having failed to escape from the gushing waters.

Madikeri Rural Police visited the spot and shifted the body to the District Hospital at Madikeri.
