Mysore/Mysuru: Women of Roopanagar, Mysuru, have formed a WhatsApp group called ‘Women Power Roopanagar’ and have been organising various virtual and other programmes for the benefit of the area residents and to strengthen a sense of community.
Plastic and other dry waste collection for recycling
Awareness messages were posted on various WhatsApp groups within Roopanagar requesting residents to segregate plastic and other dry waste items at source.
On the fixed day, Darshan of Jagruth Tech, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC)-approved plastic waste collector, would collect these items for recycling.
The collected items are converted into interlock paver blocks and Eco-TUF furniture. So, by recycling, the residents are helping in Solid Waste Management.
Donated newspapers
During the current second wave of COVID-19, the MCC has provided shelter to the needy/migrant workers/ homeless people.
The Corporation has provided training and arrangements have been made for these people to make newspaper covers so that they earn some income during their stay at the shelter.
To help this cause, the residents of Roopanagar came together and have donated newspapers weighing around 125 kg to 150 kg. This was picked up by the MCC. Nodal Officer of MCC, Dr. Byralingayya has appreciated residents of Roopanagar for this novel initiative.
Plastic-free campaign
‘Women Power Roopanagar’ — the ladies wing of ‘Namma Roopanagara Residents Welfare Association’ with the support from ‘Deepa House Building Cooperative Society,’ had organised a volunteer event with a motto ‘Make Roopanagar Plastic Free, Clean & Beautiful.’
The volunteers and eco-warriors of Roopanagar walked the streets of the layout and collected over 40 bags of plastic waste littered on the streets and vacant plots. Plastic waste so collected will be handed over to Jagruth Tech for recycling.
An awareness programme for the residents was also a part of this initiative. It has been planned to hold such eco-friendly initiatives periodically and continue to spread awareness in the community.
This was also held as part of ‘World Environment Day 2021’ and ‘United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration’ — Reimagine-Recreate-Restore.
