Workshop on Roof-top Gardening

Mysore/Mysuru: A one-day workshop on ‘Roof-top gardening and home gardening’ was held at Dr. M.S. Hall in Curzon Park premises here recently.

Addressing the workshop, former Additional Director of Horticulture, Dr. Ramakrishnaiah, said: “Horticulture was not limited to rural areas. Crops such as vegetables, greens, fruits can be grown in the backyard of our houses and on Roof-tops too.”

Pointing out that urban horticulture is fast developing, he said that some noted private companies too are showing interest in roof-top gardening, which is a welcome development. He further said that there are plans to organise a ‘Raitha Marukatte’ (Farmers Market) at Kuppanna Park, aimed at promoting organic farming.

Listing the necessities for roof-top gardens, Dr. Ramakrishnaiah said that houses must have a flat roof and must be structurally strong enough to withstand the additional weight. Also, the roofs must have outlets for water draining. It is also necessary to ensure that light materials and fertilisers are used for roof-top gardens, he added.

Retired Joint Director of Agriculture, Dr. Chandrashekar, speaking on the occasion, said that it is important to grow Tulsi, Aloe Vera, Menthol, Neem and other medicinal plants as they are not only bio-friendly, but are also of medicinal value.

Deputy Director of Horticulture, Rudresh, was also present.
