World Breastfeeding Week from tomorrow

Mysuru: World Breastfeeding Week will be celebrated in different parts of the city from Aug.1 to 7, according to Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Mysuru District Branch President Dr. Rajeshwari Madappa.

Addressing a press meet at Pathrakartara Bhavan here yesterday, Dr. Rajeshwari Madappa said that the Week will be celebrated in association with JSS Hospital, MMC&RI and Paediatricians from Mysuru district.

Pointing out that the theme for 2019 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is ‘Empower Parents. Enable breastfeeding,’ she said that the focus will be on supporting both the parents to be empowered, which is vital in order to realise their breastfeeding goals.

Noting that breastfeeding is a wonderful gift for a mother as well as her baby, she said that breastfeeding also provides health benefits for both mothers and babies beyond emotional satisfaction.

Zilla Panchayat (ZP) CEO K. Jyothi will inaugurate WBW at Rajendra Centenary Hall in JSS Hospital premises at 10 am tomorrow (Aug.1).

The WBW will be held at LSS Maternity Hospital in Jayalaskhmipuram on Aug.2, at Sigma Hospital in Sarswathipuram on Aug.3, Narayana Multi-Speciality Hospital at Devanur on Ring Road and at Apollo BGS Hospital on Aug.5 and at Teresian College (Awareness Programme) on Aug.6. The valedictory will take place at MMC&RI Platinum Jubilee Hall in J.K. Grounds at 3 pm on Aug.7, she said and added that MMC&RI Dean and Director Dr. C.P. Nanjaraj, K.R. Hospital Paediatrics Department Head Dr. Sudha Rudrappa, Women and Child Welfare Dept. Deputy Director K. Padma and others will take part in the valedictory.

Indian Academy of Paediatrics Secretary Dr. H.C. Krishnakumar, who also addressed the press meet, explained the practical advantages of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding provides a unique emotional experience for the nursing mother and the baby, he added.
