World Environment Day: Institutions join hands to rejuvenate Belawadi and Hootagalli kalyanis

June 3, 2024

Mysore/Mysuru: As part of World Environment Day, Hootagalli City Municipal Council in association with Infosys, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), Maharaja Institute of Technology (MIT) and Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) have taken up the rejuvenation of Belawadi and Hootagalli kalyanis (ponds).

Both the kalyanis were in a dilapidated state becoming a breeding place for insects and weeds. Being among the oldest kalyanis in Mysuru, both the kalyanis played a vital role in fulfilling the drinking water needs for villagers and animals. However, with urbanisation and implementation of drinking water supply system, these kalyani remained neglected.

Having learnt about the kalyanis, Hootagalli CMC Commissioner Chandrashekar conducted a thorough inspection and also enquired about the old kalyanis with local residents  on Friday before taking up the cleaning works.

Hootagalli CMC officials, representatives of Infosys, MIT, SVYM and SJCE took part in cleaning works.

Meanwhile, Chandrashekar also called upon the residents to not waste rainwater and said that allowing the rainwater into UGD would affect the water bodies and also deny water to animals.

He also said since the rainwater was being let into the UGD there was an increase in complaints of UGDs overflowing especially during heavy rains.
