World Environment Day tomorrow: MUDA to form Committee to protect saplings

Mysore/Mysuru: Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) will form a Committee to look after the saplings planted in city, said H.V. Rajeev, Chairman of MUDA.

Addressing a press conference at MUDA Hall here yesterday, he said the MUDA has plans to plant around 25,000 saplings of various species, fruit bearing, long standing and oxygen generating in parks, open spaces and other places on June 5, on the occasion of World Environment Day. This day will be celebrated in a novel way in association of Mysuru City Corporation, Forest Department, Hasiru Samsthe and District Administration at Hasiru Samsthe premises, near Devarayanakere, Nanjangud Road at 10 am. 

The importance of life-saving oxygen has been understood now especially after the outbreak of Corona 1st and 2nd wave. A Committee will be formed for protection of the plants like watering, erecting tree guards and vigilance, he said. 

Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji, District Minister S.T.Somashekar and four legislators of city, S.A. Ramdas, L. Nagendra, Tanveer Sait and G.T. Devegowda will hand over the saplings to interested individuals and organisations.

He said Hasiru Samsthe (NGO) has grown 50,000 saplings at its nursery and the same will be distributed to only interested individuals or organisations. The MUDA has kept aside Rs. 80 lakh in its budget under the Urban Afforestation scheme and Rs.40 lakh to grow one lakh saplings in city parks, open spaces and other places. 

Those interested to grow the plants can contact Vinaya, Horticulture Officer, MUDA (98802-22374) or Mahesh, Horticulture Officer, MCC (97400-12768) or Sheshaprasad of Hasiru Samsthe (93530-06616). 

MUDA Committee will conduct surprise checks on the saplings grown by those persons, he added. MUDA Commissioner Dr. D.B. Natesh, Superintending Engineer Shankar and others were present.
