Young linguists urged to take up research on grammars

Mysuru: The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, celebrated its 49th Foundation Day on July 17 by holding special lectures by distinguished linguists.  

Prof. K.V. Subbarao, formerly Professor of Linguistics, University of Delhi and Radhakrishnan Chair Professor, University of Hyderabad, who inaugurated the event, urged the young linguists to take up robust research on grammars of various Indian languages with incorporation of new insights of linguistic theory. He emphasised that in the age of technology with enormous facilities and financial sources, researchers should contribute significantly to Indian languages.  

Prof. Ramesh Chand Sharma, Professor and Chairman, Department of Linguistics, University of Delhi, expressed his happiness about the contributions of CIIL ever since its inception and also articulated his deep desires for the growth of the institute as a unique place for research in diverse areas of language and linguistics.  

Prof. Rajesh Sachdeva, former Director of CIIL, appreciated the contributions made by        Prof. D.P. Pattanayak, Founder Director. Prof. D. G. Rao, Director, CIIL presided.

Dr. L. Ramamoorthy, Reader-cum-Research Officer, welcomed and briefed about the significance of the Foundation Day.  Prof. Umarani Pappuswamy, Professor-cum-Dy. Director, proposed a vote of thanks.

The inaugural session was followed by three academic sessions. Prof. K.V. Subbarao delivered a lecture on “The Concealed Diamonds of Indigenous Languages of South Asia”;       Prof. R.C.Sharma lectured on “Going beyond Rethinking Linguistics in the 21st Century” while Prof. Rajesh Sachdeva spoke on “The role of CIIL in Language Planning.”

Prof. P.R.D. Fernandez, Prof. P. Perumalsamy, Deputy Directors,  and Dr. C.V. Sivaramakrisha felicitated the guests. Dr. Narayan K. Choudhary, Sujoy Sarkar,  Dr. L.R. Prem Kumar, Lecturer-cum-JROs of the institute convened the academic sessions. Tariq Khan, Lecturer-cum-JRO compered. Dr. G. Prabhakar, Reader-cum-Research Officer, SRLC was present along with the staff of CIIL.
