Mysuru: The activities of Mysuru Zoo Youth Club – 2017 was inaugurated at an event organised at the Zoo auditorium here this morning.
The activities were inaugurated by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Bengaluru, Kishan Singh Sugara. Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF) and Member Secretary of Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) B.P. Ravi and Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), Mysuru Circle P.B. Karunakar were present as chief guests.
Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) and Executive Director of Mysuru Zoo C. Ravishankar, in his welcome address, said that the Youth Club began in 1992 for students in the age group between 12 and 18 years to create awareness on conservation of wildlife and environment.
He said that 60 students from 25 schools and five colleges including students from Mangaluru have been selected as members for the club this year.

Ravishankar said that the knowledge imparted to the members of the club was vital for their understanding of the components of bio-diversity and their interaction and added that it is one of the sustained public awareness campaigns and a communication programme which involves citizens of future to enable them to understand both the utilitarian and the aesthetic importance of nature. He said that many facts about animal behaviour, biodiversity, captive wildlife management, forest ecosystems, global warming, recycling of waste and its management, water conservation, effects of road – kills etc. would be taught during the activities which will be held for 20 Sundays from 10 am to 1.30 pm.
Ravishankar said that classes will be conducted along with trip to Ranganathittu Birds Sanctuary, National Parks, Karanji Lake and Regional Museum of Natural History during the youth club period.
PCCF Kishan Singh Sugara said that the Forest Department would celebrate Forest Day with the theme ‘Neerigagi Aranya’ by holding programmes throughout the year.
He said that the youth club enables its members to be in contact with nature and added that it was important to conserve forests as once forests are destroyed it would be a disaster.
