Mysuru: Maintaining that the Karnataka Governor’s decision to grant 15 days time for the BJP Government to prove majority in the floor of the House was not correct, former Lokayukta Justice (retd.) Santhosh Hegde has welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling asking the BJP Government to prove majority in a day.
Speaking to press persons at Vidyavardhaka College premises here yesterday, Hegde, however, said that the Governor’s decision to invite BJP, the single largest party to form the Government was correct.
Reiterating that 15 days time given by the Governor was too long as it gives scope for large-scale horse-trading, the former Lokayukta quoted the Apex Court’s ruling in S.R. Bommai case, wherein the Supreme Court had said that the single largest party can be invited to form Government.
Pointing out that the voters are to be blamed for hung verdict, he observed that voters must not fall prey to allurements.
Regretting criminalisation of politics, Justice Hegde bemoaned that many candidates with criminal background have got elected to the Assembly.
Reacting to Congress claim of strengthening the Lokayukta, he said that the claim was a bundle of lies as the Congress has inactivated Lokayukta by creating Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB).
He further said that the Congress did not act on many Lokayukta reports.
He stressed on the need for empowerment of the Lokayukta for strengthening the democracy.
