Visvesvaraya Industrial Training Centre inaugurated

Mysore/Mysuru: The State Government has entered into an agreement with Tata Technologies Limited to upgrade and modernise 150 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and thereby create increased employment opportunities to the youths, said Deputy Chief Minister and Higher Education Minister Dr. C.N. Ashwathnarayan.

He was speaking after inaugurating Visvesvaraya Industrial Training Centre, started by Visvesvaraya Educational Trust at Bogadi 2nd stage in city on Jan. 25.

The Minister said according to the agreement, these Government-run ITIs were being upgraded at a cost of Rs.4,636.50 crore in partnership with Tata Technologies Ltd., and other industry partners. Skill development training would be provided as per current demands of the industries. Along with Tata Technologies, about 20 companies were contributing Rs. 4,080 crore under their CSR funds. The rest would be provided by the State Government. The upgrade of each ITI would cost Rs.30 crore each, the Dy.CM said.

He said it had has been intended to provide training in necessary skills to ITI students based on requirements of Industry 4.0 (that is, 4th industrial revolution) and provide better employment opportunities These institutes would function as Common Facility Centres. Efforts were on to attract more investments to the State through skilled human resource in different fields. Every year, over one lakh youths would get better employment opportunities. Apart from this, ten new courses have been initiated based on the demands of industries, he added.

Dr. Ashwathnarayan said there were 1,713 ITIs in the State, out of which 270 were Government, 196 aided and 1,247 run by private individuals. A total of 1.8 lakh students were studying in these institutes. By upgrading 150 ITIs in the State, these institutions would be transformed into prominent training centres. 

Tata Technologies would modernise 150 ITIs, with new infrastructure, industry-oriented courseware, training and support for advanced equipment and software to benefit the students to get better employment opportunities. They would also strengthen training, counselling and placement cells to train, guide and create employment opportunities. 

Laboratories would be upgraded by setting up new machinery and technology. Action has been taken to plan appropriate syllabus based on the demands of Industry 4.0. Electric vehicles, agricultural machinery, aerospace and defence, horticulture and smart city are among the key sectors that would be the focus areas. As many as 300 trainers from Tata Technologies and associate industries would impart training in these 150 ITIs.

Setting up of workshops

He said workshops in 150 Government ITIs would be constructed at a cost of Rs.200 crore and the work is expected to complete soon. Internship has been made compulsory for students while studying and after completion they would be provided with apprenticeship for a period ranging from 3 months to 9 months with the monthly scholarship of Rs.1,500. Efforts were made to get scholarship from the companies too, he added.
