56-year-old Basavanna’s organs donated to save four lives

April 25, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: The 56-year-old Basavanna was brought to Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, on Apr. 17 from K.R. Pet in an extremely critical condition. The initial CT scan showed a brain stem infarct and he was shifted to ICU immediately for life support and intensive care.

On Apr. 21, his condition worsened and at 6.39 am he was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure as per the hospital protocol stipulated by the Transplant of Human Organs Act 1994 by panellist doctors at Apollo BGS Hospitals.

Basavanna was healthy before this incident and further tests confirmed his eligibility for organ donation. His family was counselled who later came forward to donate his organs.

As per organ donation protocol, officials from SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, formerly Jeeva Sarthakathe) initiated the process by the organ recipients’ waiting list.  On Apr. 21,  at around 3.50 pm, Basavanna’s organs (Liver, 2 Kidneys and Heart Valves) were harvested with a cross-clamp done at 3.23 pm at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru. The organs donated are as follows:

Liver – Apollo BGS Hospital, Mysuru; Left kidney – Apollo BGS Hospital, Mysuru; Right kidney – Manipal Hospital, Mysuru; Heart valves – Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bengaluru.

Apollo BGS Hospitals is the Licensed Centre for Multiorgan Transplants in Mysuru which is now recognised as the 5th Zone for Organ Transplants under SOTTO, Karnataka.

To facilitate the crossmatch facility for Organ Transplants in this region, SOTTO has signed an MoU with Apollo BGS Hospitals under which all cross-matching of transplant patients will be undertaken at Apollo BGS Hospitals, Mysuru, saving the travel time to Bengaluru, which is crucial during the Organ Transplantation.
