Mysuru: The 70th anniversary of Mysore Chalo movement, marking the seeking of responsible Government in Mysore State after India attained Independence in 1947, was held under the aegis of Mysuru City and District Freedom Fighters Association at Subbarayanakere grounds in the city morning.
Speaking at the event, Freedom Fighter Venkatachalaiah said the Mysore Chalo movement is a golden letter day in the history of Mysuru.
Pointing out that it was on Oct. 24, 1947 that K.C. Reddy, who was in the forefront of Mysore Chalo movement, took over as the first Chief Minister of the State, he said that the aim of the movement was primarily to install a responsible government in the then Princely State of Mysore.
Noting that there was resistance from the Mysore administrators leading to Mysore Chalo movement which culminated in installing a responsible government on Oct. 24, 1947, Venkatachalaiah lamented that the movement is almost forgotten in the city, as can be seen in the few people present at the event.
He further observed that the State government had failed to recognise those who dedicated themselves to the movement.
Earlier, the Association President Dr. M.G. Krishnamurthy unfurled the flag.
Later, students of Bharat Seva Dal High School in Manasagangothri took out an impressive Band procession from the venue to Ramaswamy Circle and paid tributes to Ramaswamy, a student who was killed on the spot in the firing on agitators on Sept.9, 1947. ADC T. Yogesh, Association office-bearers H.N. Ashwathnarayan and B. Karunakaran, freedom fighters Y.C. Revanna, B. Lingaiah, G.L.N. Ayya, P.S. Jagadish and others were present.
It is appalling these so called Freedom Fighters using youngsters to drum support. 70 years ago these veterans who were at best teenagers were similarly used by Congressmen to serve their self serving ambition to garner power and dance to their Delhi masters tune.
