Mysuru: As part of World Environment Day celebration, Science Ashram conducted a Seed Ball Fest in collaboration with the Forest Department, Mysore. The event was intended to create awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and increasing the green cover of Mysuru.
The celebrations began a week prior where all the students gathered at the Tinkering Lab and prepared seed balls. The seeds were selected in consultation with the Forest Department to make the seed balls. Students wrapped the seeds in a mixture of clay and compost, and then dried them for a week. Seed balls are an easy and sustainable method of afforestation. They also are cost effective and have a convenient dispersal mechanism.
The programme began at Science Ashram Tinkering Lab with an interaction on the World Environment Day theme for 2018 – Beat Plastic Pollution. Facts about plastic pollution were shared and methods to fight this pollution were discussed. Students were encouraged to come up with innovative ideas on plastic management to beat this pollution.
Science Ashram team with its student army headed to the foot of Chamundi Hill for the Seed Bombing. Enthusiastic parents also joined the kids in this cause. The seed balls were thrown in the selected location. Many other seeds were also sown. The programme was guided by the officials of the Forest Department.
