Sir,
When I read the report in today’s edition regarding the passing away of Prof. M. I. K. Durrani, my mind raced back to 1970-71. I was studying PUC in Yuvaraja’s College. We belonged to the last batch one-year PUC. Politicians had ruined the academic year for trivial reasons. The agitation led by the late Devaraja Urs to unseat Veerendra Patil had ensured that for half of the year, the classes were cancelled.
It was during this period that I came under the spell of Prof. Durrani. He had a booming voice which immediately attracted and held the students’ attention. His command of the language was superb. He had a warm personality and his concern for students was genuine. Even though he had taught us for just about three months (rest being washed out by the agitation), he had left a lasting impression on me and all my batch mates.
I continued my education for seven years after that, five years of BE at NIE, and two years of M.Tech at IIT-Bombay. In all these years, I may have come across about ten teachers of his calibre. My deep salutations to a revered Guru.
May his soul rest in peace.

Sir,
Prof. Durrani was my teacher in Yuvaraja’s College when I was a student of Intermediate Class. His style of teaching English was remarkable. We learnt some English because of him. I pray the Almighty to rest his soul in peace.
