Thalassery-Mysuru Railway Line via South Kodagu: Centre to provide 20% funding – Union Minister Alphons

July 4, 2018

Mysuru: Even as Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal repeatedly saying that Centre has shelved the vexatious Thalassery-Mysuru Railway Line project via South Kodagu which has run into opposition from elected representatives, environmentalists and people of Kodagu district, Union Minister of State for Tourism and Information Technology K.J. Alphons has said that the Centre will support the project and will provide 20 percent of the investment cost.

Kannanthanam Joseph Alphons, who hails from Kerala, was speaking after inaugurating a workshop-cum-seminar on ‘Development of Tourism in Wayanad’, organised by the Wayanad Chamber of Commerce in association with the District Tourism Promotion Council and the Wayanad Tourism Organisation at Kalpetta in Kerala yesterday.

Mentioning about Thalassery-Manandavadi-Mysuru and Nilambur-Sulthan Batheri-Nanjangud Railway link projects, Alphons said he would provide all support to make the dream of the people of Kerala come true. The total project cost of the 181-kilometre Thalassery-Mysuru Railway Line is over Rs. 5,000.03 crore.

Meanwhile, Railway sources said that the office of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is pushing for the Thalassery-Mysuru Railway Line and the project has now been revised and renamed as Kannur seaport-airport-Wayanad-Coorg-Mysuru rail route, with links to Kozhikode from Manandavadi and from there to Mysuru via South Kodagu.

Apart from the controversial Thalassery-Mysuru line, the Kerala government is also pushing for the Nilambur-Nanjangud Railway Line which is said to be the shortest rail route from Kerala to Bengaluru.

This particular line will pass through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, Mudumalai and Masinagudi Forests, destroying hundreds of acres of green belt and elephant corridor. Railway sources said that the Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has been engaged by the Kerala Government to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Nilambur-Nanjangud railway line. Earlier, the DPR task was given to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) that withdrew from the project.

The DMRC could not get the clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to carry out the survey of the forest and sanctuary areas in  Karnataka and Kerala, and thus it abandoned the project.

Now the KRDCL has been entrusted with the work after the Kerala Government took approval of the MoEFCC and the Ministry of Railways to do the survey in forests of Karnataka and Kerala. It has also been asked to secure the recommendation of both the Forest Departments in Kerala  and Karnataka.

When the DPR preparing task was handled by the DMRC, its Principal Advisor E. Sreedharan had stated that the Nilambur-Nanjangud line can be completed without disturbing wildlife in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. He had given a proposal involving tunnel construction with the use of tunnel-boring machines (TBMs), which would cause minimum impact to surrounding areas.

However, the Karnataka Forest Department had not received any proposal for the railway line. Sources said that the Kerala Government was pushing for the Nilambur–Nanjangud, Thalassery–Mysuru and Chamarajnagar–Mettupalayam line as they would greatly reduce travel time from Karnataka to Kerala and Tamil Nadu and also help Kerala commercially.

A small section of mean mentality coorgies are acting as saviour of forest…but majority of coorgies wont object…
For devolopment and promotion tourism this line is very much needed

  5. Abdhu Shaafi says:

Whether Kerala will be benefited or not Coorg will be benefited as Kannur Airport will be the nearest Airport to Coorg.

Coorg, the land of Spices will be benefitted due to access to the ports of Kerala from where highest export of spices takes place.

In the last budget line upto Kushalnagar is approved. Connecting it with Kannur will be less expensive and may be less valuable land of Coorg required.

  6. Varun says:

Why Modi ji is silent. He has visited Bhutan let him tell why it is important to preserve Kodagu natural resources. We all should stand at the entry point of rail project near Kodagu border and push them back. Let us fight by all means.its now or never.

  7. Rajesh says:

Taking care of mother earth and trees should be most immediate responsbity for all the people of Kerala and Karnataka and for India also , western forest which r rain forest for whole country ,we should not allow any schemes r development in this very very important areas and we get water and rain for forest and whole eco system will be affected by this project ok thanks

  8. M S Rajaram says:

It is better to develop chamrajnagar to sathyamangalam to mettupalayam connecting coimbatore and beyond than mulling with the nature of kodugu affecting the little left green wealth of the western ghats to get the desired results

  9. Pradeep S says:

We Kannadiga’s should be united and should show our strength to Bloody Kerala Politicians and we should never allow this useless and disastrous project to take place, our voice should reach central government

What development of karnataka are the keralites talking about?Does destrution of eco sytems and green cover mean development?keralites dont have an agenda for develpment and only beleive in occupation by whatever means..Stop the survey in its tracks and devlopment will follow.Dont be like the Chinese with their no questions asked attitude.Rule of fairplay and democracy should prevail.Stop the ambition of crossing tbe border to reach a City.Bengaluru also watch out.Your population is also rising

  12. Jayke mananthavady says:

Kerala is just asking a commercial route to Mysuru and Bangalore Which benefits both of the states. Kerala is also very keen about conservation of environment. If a shrort public trasport is not enabled people will use more cars and subsequent hydrocarbon emmision will not confined to borders of a state or district. Kodavas will get maximum benefits from this project because they can travel in multidirectional way. Kerala people stood always with kannadigas for long centuries and will continue the same. We are your friends and thinkIng prosperity of our great country. Moreover the selected route through south of Coorg will not affect any national reserve forests.
