Plumbers and Drainage Workers Conference in city on Apr. 30

Mysuru – A mega conference of Akhila Karnataka Plumbers and Drainage Workers will be held in the city on Apr. 30 at Dasara Exhibition Grounds premises. The conference will be organised by Sir M. Visvesvaraya Plumbers and Drainage Workers’ Welfare Association.

The conference will be held to highlight the problems faced by plumbers and sanitation workers and more than 10,000 workers from this unorganised sector are expected to attend. The conference is being held as part of World Plumbers’ Day on Mar. 11, World Water Day on Mar. 22 and International Labour Day  on May 1.

A mega rally will be taken out on Apr. 30 at 8 am from the Sri Kote Anjaneyaswamy Temple and the rally will be accompanied by cultural troupes. Suttur Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji, Adichunchanagiri Seer Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji, Adichunchanagiri Mutt Mysuru Branch’s Sri Someshwara Swamiji, Chief Minister Siddharamaiah, Labour Minister Santhosh Lad and a host of MLAs and MPs are attending the conference.

According to organisers, the Governments should consider escalating livelihood costs and subsequently affix a revised minimum wage for the lakhs of workers in the unorganised sector. Saying that unorganised workers constitute 90% of the country’s workforce, they have urged the Governments to ensure accident and life claim for the unorganised sector.

There are many workers who suffer mild-to-grievous injuries while working and the compensation is indefinitely delayed for most of these workers who are from lower economic strata. Their list of demands also included housing and granting them ESI (Employee State Insurance).
