Mysuru: Doctors at city’s Cauvery Heart and Multispeciality Hospital have performed  the first case of valve in valve Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure on a 57-year-old critically ill patient with failure of the surgically implanted valve recently.

The patient had undergone an open heart surgery with replacement of his aortic valve and aortic root (Bentall Surgery) five years back at Bengaluru but his valve started to leak and the patient had developed severe symptoms of heart failure and had multiple admissions. He had run out of options when Dr. Rajagopal Jambunathan, Chief Consultant Cardiologist, advised this novel procedure.  

Here, an artificial valve is mounted on a stent and inserted through the artery in groin and is implanted within the earlier valve to replace the same.  After the successful procedure, the patient rapidly improved and became normal within couple of days and was discharged. 

 The team led by Dr. Rajagopal consisted of Cardiologists Dr. J. Veenu, Dr. B.E. Yathish, Dr. Shridhar, Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. S.C. Madhuprakash and Cardiac Anaesthetist Dr. Satwik Telkar.  They conducted the surgery under the direction of Dr. Manik Chopra of Ahmedabad.
