Mysore/Mysuru: Depressed over her sister’s death, a 75-year-old woman committed suicide by setting herself on fire on D. Devaraja Urs Road on Friday midnight.
The deceased is Jayalakshmamma (Thayakka), a resident of Gangamma Gudi Street in Devaraja Mohalla.
Jayalakshmamma, a spinster, had a petty shop behind Devaraja Urs Road and was conducting business for a living.
It is learnt that she was depressed after the death of her sister about four months ago and had attempted suicide two months back. Local residents, who saw Jayalakshmamma carrying a bottle of kerosene, had stopped her from committing suicide.
But on Friday at about 1 am, Jayalakshmamma came to Devaraja Urs Road, sat on the footpath, doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire. The whole incident has been captured on a CCTV camera.
Devaraja Police had admitted Jayalakshmamma to K.R. Hospital where she succumbed to burn injuries at about 6 am yesterday. The body was shifted to MMC&RI mortuary, where post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the family members.
Devaraja Inspector Diwakar, has registered a case.
