Mysuru Literary Fest on June 18

June 15, 2017

Countdown begins

The countdown has begun for the first Mysuru Literary Fest organised by the Mysore Literary Association on Sunday, June 18. The venue — Senate Bhavan — in the sprawling, beautiful Manasagangothri campus is getting spruced up as the literati and cognoscenti will descend in large numbers to listen and interact with some of the finest authors as this is what the Lit Fest is all about. As such, Star of Mysore is the natural media partner.

Star of Mysore is profiling, since June 13, the eclectic mix of authors who will be a part of the Fest. Read about them and be ready to participate in the event, which Mysuru is waiting, for a long time…

Dr. Harish Trivedi, Distinguished Scholar-Critic

Dr. Harish Trivedi studied Sanskrit at Allahabad University, did a Ph.D in Britain on Virginia Woolf, and has taught at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and (as a visiting professor) at Chicago and London. He has published in the areas of Translation, Post-colonialism, Indian Literature, and World Literature. He is currently editing an anthology of Indian Literature from 1500 B.C. to 2000 A.D., and is one of the contributing editors of an international project based in Stockholm for writing a history of World Literature.

Ruth Vanita, a scholar and a student who follows his footsteps, says, “I have known Prof. Trivedi for only a decade. He had the audacity to challenge the supremacy of canonical English literature. His irreverent wit spared nobody, including himself, and he remains incorrigible to date.

Lecturing at the Arts Faculty of Delhi University, he polarised the MA English students better than any politician could. The full house on his first The Tempest lecture of the new academic session would invariably dwindle to a deserted village the very next week.

Independence is a dangerous thing. It is a double-edged sword, twice cursed. Not only does it threaten the old calcified structures, it also endangers the soul that embraces it, says Prof. Trivedi.

His contribution as a littérateur has been tremendous. Be it sharing his knowledge with his students and his dedication for the love of literature which has been truly remarkable.

Note: Dr. Harish Trivedi will talk on the subject “Professing English, Practising Hypocrisy — Last Fifty Years” at the Lit Fest.
